Every Flu season has the potential to cause a lot of illness, doctor's visits, hospitalizations and deaths. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is concerned that the new H1N1 flu virus could result in a particularly severe flu season this year. Vaccines are the best tool we have to prevent influenza. CDC is recommending that everyone gets vaccinated against both the Seasonal Flu and the H1N1 Flu. The H1N1 Flu vaccine is not intended to replace the seasonal flu vaccine - it is intended to be used along-side the Seasonal Flu vaccine.
Because of the high demand, we want to make the whole process as efficient as possible. Please call during normal office hours to make an appointment to receive both the Seasonal and H1N1 Flu vaccines. We will have some Saturday hours over the next several months to give additional Flu vaccines.
We have both the injectable (inactivated) and nasal mist (live attenuated). The nasal form can only be given to individuals who have no medical problems and must be 2-49 years of age.
Production of the Seasonal Flu vaccine was decreased to allow for the production of the H1N1 Flu vaccine. Shipments of the Seasonal Flu vaccine are delayed, but we expect to be receiving more on a weekly basis. Please call before your appointment to verify we have the vaccine in stock. Please be patient while waiting in the office as we have to accommodate giving many individuals these vaccines.
There are a few further rules that must be followed:
1. The seasonal and H1N1 injectable vaccines can be given on the same day, but must be given in different arms.
2. The nasal form of one flu type and the injectable of the other flu type can be given on the same day.
3. The nasal forms of the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines can both be given, but must be separated by 28 days.
4. All children under 10 years of age will need 2 doses of the H1N1 vaccine, separated by 28 days.
5. All children under 9 years of age will need 2 doses of the seasonal vaccine, separated by 28 days, unless they received 2 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine in the prior years.
There will be enough vaccine for everybody over the next several months. Currently, we are receiving only partial shipments so available vaccine can be evenly distributed around PA. As such, we are limited to offering the vaccine to the following higher risk individuals:
1. All children 6 months to 24 years old.
2. Any parents or caregivers of infants under 6 months of age.
3. Any pregnant women (must be cleared by their OB-Gyn)- can only get the injection.
4. Any healthcare or EMS personnel.
5. Any person 25-64 years old who have chronic health conditions that put them at a higher risk of Flu complications - these include: asthma, cardiac disease (not hypertension), diabetes, individuals who are immunosuppressed, neurological/neuromuscular, kidney diseases or sickle cell anemia.
Once enough H1N1 Flu vaccine becomes available, we will be able to give the vaccine to healthy persons over 25 years of age.

The AAP understands that parents may have concerns about vaccinating their children. Vaccines are one of the most successful medical advances of all time. Vaccine safety is an issue of great importance to the AAP and to pediatricians, who support ongoing research and increased funding in this area. In addition, the AAP supports further research into the causes of autism.
The following information is to help parents and caregivers to understand some of the common issues and questions surrounding this topic.

Vaccine Information From The CDC
At a Glance: Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) are information sheets produced by the that explain to vaccine recipients, their parents, or their legal representatives both the benefits and risks of a vaccine. Federal law requires that VISs be handed out whenever (before each dose) certain vaccinations are given.
Dr. Bob, Dr. Joann, and Dr. Dan would like to particularly mention the following new four vaccines:

Medical Crisis in Pennsylvania Help Save The Practice Of Medicine In Pennsylvania Before It Is Too Late!
There is a real malpractice crisis in Pennsylvania. Because the risk of extreme malpractice awards has been too high and costly, many private insurance carriers have left the state or have stopped providing malpractice coverage to those doctors (even with a clean claim history) who were left stranded by the carriers who abandoned PA.
